A letter to our hockey families.

February 27, 2018

Dear Muskegon Hockey Families,

As they usually do toward the end of one hockey season, the discussions about next hockey season have begun. With these discussions, the rumor mill has also started, and I want to speak to you on behalf of the Junior Jacks about those rumors.

There have been rumors that we, as an organization, have animosity toward the Lakeshore Chiefs and any families choosing to play for the Chiefs. Those allegations are false.

As a community, we have the privilege and honor of being home to not one, but two youth hockey organizations. Such opportunities are not often afforded by MAHA or USA Hockey, but we are lucky enough to have it. It is our responsibility to make sure both organizations have the best opportunity to flourish and offer our players the most enjoyable hockey experiences they can find. Our one and only priority is to help our players and families learn and love the game of hockey, which Muskegon has such a rich history in, through positive life enriching experiences.

Hockey differs from many other sports in that it is a decision, passion, and endeavor which involves the entire family. As hockey parents, we have the immense responsibility of making the best decisions for our children and family when it comes to their hockey experience. I would love for your decision to be playing for the Junior Jacks, but that is not my decision to make. If you feel your player and/or family will have a better experience playing for the Chiefs, we fully support you. Our only concern is for your family to enjoy hockey in Muskegon and to continue helping us grow it, whether in a Chiefs uniform or a Junior Jacks uniform. I would request for you to share, if comfortable, your reasons for choosing to leaveso that we may work to better ourselves based on your feedback. Further, if you join the Chiefs and decide later that the Junior Jacks are a better fit for your family, we will welcome you back with open arms!

Regardless of the logo, Muskegon hockey is here to stay, and I am excited to see what the future holds. Each and every player will be part of the next chapter in this city’s rich history and they all deserve the best we can give them.

Finally, thank you for your support in the 2017-18 season. We have watched all our players grow in hockey and as human beings and we couldn’t be more proud or excited for their next steps. We invite you to attend our board meetings, the first Monday of each month at 6:30PM, they are open to the public. If you have any questions or concerns about anything, please feel free to reach out to myself or any other board member.
